The National Weather Services in Shreveport, Houston/Galveston, and Lake Charles have issued Winter Storm Watches which will go into effect Monday night and continue through most of the day Tuesday.

Those watches cover numerous counties and parishes in east and southeast Texas, as well as central and southern Louisiana. Some of the Texas cities that will be under the watch include Tyler, Lufkin, Nacogdoches, Jacksonville, Carthage, Jasper, Woodville, Livingston, Groveton, Beaumont, Galveston, and Houston.

Moderate to heavy snowfall is possible in the watch area with accumulations of an inch to more than six inches. Ironically, cities located in southeast Texas and southern Louisiana have a better chance of heavier snowfall than cities farther north.

Freezing rain and sleet will also be a bigger hazard in areas closer to the Upper Texas Coast.

Various trusted weather models are still disagreeing on the amount of snowfall possible in east and southeast Texas. However, most models indicate that the areas near the I-10 corridor from Houston to the Louisiana border should get the lion's share of the wintry precipitation.

School Closures

Several school districts such as Jasper, Colmesneil, and Woodville have made the decision to close on Tuesday. Unless there is a drastic change in the forecast, I would expect the majority of schools in the Pineywoods and in southeast Texas to close as well.

A Cold Weather Advisory is also in place for much of East Texas Saturday night. Low temperatures are expected to dip into the 20s and teens through Thursday with the coldest readings coming Tuesday and Wednesday nights.
