Another week, another deadline.  Thursday of next week, April 14th, is the deadline for Angelina County residents to register to vote in the May elections.

People who want to vote do have to meet some requirements.  By law, you must be a United States citizen, at least 18 years old on Election Day, not a convicted felon (unless sentence, probation, and/or parole have been completed), and not declared mentally incapacitated by a court of law.

The May 14th elections are for city councils and school boards, and there are no statewide issues on the ballot.

Some elections have been canceled because no one filed to run against the incumbents.

This is why Lufkin's Ward 5 won't have an election.  Neither will the City of Burke, the Lufkin School District and the Hudson School District.  The City of Hudson is also planning to cancel its election for the same reason, but this has to be approved by the Hudson City Council.

Voter registration applications are available at the Angelina County Tax Office, at 606 E. Lufkin Ave.

Early voting begins May 2 and ends May 10.
