See? Deer really do come out of nowhere!

Recently, a public transit driver in western Pennsylvania had an unexpected passenger board the vehicle. The above video shows a deer crashing through the windshield of a public bus and then proceeding to freak out beyond belief. We’re not sure if that’s because of the confined space, the unfamiliar terrain, or because it was seemingly thrust through the window of a gargantuan bus. Luckily, all was fine once the doors were opened.

Kudos to the driver for remaining oddly calm throughout the whole ordeal. Even when the passenger didn’t pay the fare, which we’re told costs a Buck. Come on, we were all thinking it.

Yikes. It’s like in a horror movie when the deadly fog gradually creeps closer and closer, gobbling up all living things in its path. Except it’s made of ice.

In the startling, nearly seven-minute video shot on Saturday by Darla Johnson, ice atop Mille Lacs Lake in Minnesota makes its way off the surface of the lake and onto the land, appearing to grow larger and larger as 40-mph winds push it farther and farther inland.

The “ice tsunami,” as it’s being called, completely covered some areas that had just recently been people’s backyard lawns. It even managed to break through some windows and doors into people’s homes.

“It was just pushing and breaking and pushing and breaking,” Johnson told CNN. That seems an apt description: you can hear the ice moving along the ground, shards repeatedly breaking off and then getting swallowed right up by the ever-progressing monstrous sheet of white doom as it ceaselessly marches forward.

The above video was recorded by Commander Chris Hadfield whilst onboard the International Space Station. The upload — which has gone viral since being put on YouTube — is said to have taken six months to make and has already received over one million views in just a days’ time. It seems that Hadfield is returning to Earth an internet superstar. Not a bad welcome home party.

One question though: what did Bowie think about the cover?

This kid’s got big brass ones. Or maybe he was just fed up. Actually, we figure it probably requires a combination of both to pull off a stunt like this. This student at Duncanville High (on the outskirts of Dallas, Texas, in case you were wondering where such an accent comes from) was clearly sick of sitting quietly at his desk and filling out packets — useless busywork that makes sure students are prepared to take standardized tests, but doesn’t actually teach them very much. So he let his teacher know.

In a very long, and eloquent speech mostly devoid of cursing — which is pretty impressive considering how angry he clearly is — the student lets his teacher know that she should care a little bit more about her job and actually try to teach her students, because she’s responsible for their education and they’re the future of America.

The video has taken off in a big way, and the student is being interviewed by local media. Some people are calling him a hero, others think he’s just a rude teenager. What do you think?

Amanda Berry, Gina DeJesus and Michelle Knight, all of whom disappeared between 2002 and 2004 in Cleveland, have been found alive, after being kidnapped imprisoned in a house on Cleveland’s West Side.

The women are all alive and safe and in fair condition, according to Dr. Gerald Maloney, an emergency room doctor at MetroHealth Medical Center, where they are receiving treatment. They have been reunited with their families, who are calling it a miracle.

Knight went missing on August 23, 2002; she was 19 at the time. Berry disappeared in 2003, when she was 16. Georgina “Gina” DeJesus vanished a year later, at age 14.

“Help me, I’m Amanda Berry,” Berry said when she called 911 after finally escaping the house. “I’ve been kidnapped. And I’ve been missing for 10 years. And I’m here. I’m free now.” (You can hear the 911 call here.)

Police have arrested three brothers in the investigation, one of whom, Ariel Castro, owns the house where the women were discovered. Castro, 52, and his brothers, Pedro, 50, and Onil, 54, are being questioned by the FBI, which is also collecting evidence at the house. Castro is a former school bus driver who was arrested, but not indicted, for domestic violence in 1993.

The women were rescued by a man who lived next door, named Charles Ramsey, who said he heard screaming coming from the house. He and a friend, Angel Cordero, broke down the door, and out came Berry—along with a 6-year-old child (though it is unclear as of yet whether the child is Berry’s). According to Ramsey:

I’m eating my McDonald’s, I come outside, and I see this girl going nuts, trying to get out of the house. So I go on the porch. I got on the porch and she said, ‘Help me get out. I’ve been here a long time.’ I figured it was a domestic violence dispute. So I open the door. And we can’t get in that way ’cause of how the door is, it’s so much that a body can’t fit through, only your hand. So we kicked the bottom. And she comes out with a little girl and she says, ‘Call 911. My name is Amanda Berry.’

Here is the full interview he gave to WEWS:

In another bizarre twist, the son of the man who owned the house wrote an article about the missing DeJesus for Cleveland’s Plain Press in 2004, when he was a journalism student at Bowling Green University. Anthony Castro told WKYC-TV, “This is beyond comprehension. … I’m truly stunned right now.”

Police have not begun to question the women about their ordeal, choosing instead to give them time to recover and meet with their families. Deputy Police Chief Ed Tomba said at a news conference on Tuesday morning, ”Right now, we want to let them spend some time with their families and take this process very, very slowly and respectful for their families and the young girls’ needs.”

Family and friends of the rescued women waited outside the hospital on Tuesday, overjoyed by the news they had been waiting so long to hear. “I never forgot about her, ever,” said Kayla Rogers about her friend, Gina DeJesus. “This is amazing. This is a celebration. I’m so happy. I just want to see her walk out those doors so I can hug her.”

Joanna Chesimard has made history, but not in a good way.

The 65-year-old Chesimard has become the first woman to appear on the FBI’s Most Wanted Terrorist list.

Chesimard, who now goes by the name Assata Shakur, is considered a “domstic terrorist” wanted for killing a New Jersey state trooper in 1973. She’s been living in Cuba since escaping from jail in 1979.

The FBI is offering a $1 million reward for Chesimard, as is the state of New Jersey, bringing the total bounty to a hefty $2 million.

Chesimard shot Trooper Werner Foerster on a highway after she and two other men were pulled over during a traffic stop.

Chesimard was a member of the Black Liberation Army, which the FBI claims was a “radical left wing terror group that felt justified killing law enforcement officers.”

At the time of the shooting, Chesimard had been wanted for her role in several crimes, including bank robbery.

It’s not known “why the FBI is making the renewed effort to capture Chesimard.”

Chesimard is also just the second domestic terrorist included on the FBI’s list and the 46th overall. The list was created in 2001.

The annual White House Correspondents’ dinner took place this past weekend, and it was a delight. We honestly think it was probably the best performance at one of these dinners since Stephen Colbert roasted George W. Bush right in front of him (this makes us cringe a little bit less though). Only we aren’t talking about Conan O’Brien — we’re talking about President Obama, who really hammed it up this year.

In addition to some fun with Photoshop, as seen above and in this amazing picture:

<figure id="attachment_202731"class="aligncenter" >
YouTube

Obama also made a very hilarious ‘Lincoln’ spoof with the help of Steven Spielberg. It is amazing.

Here’s Obama’s entire speech, which is at least as entertaining as most sitcoms of similar length:

And of course, some good old Conan jokes as well:

On Wednesday night, an enormous fire exploded on two oil barges docked on the Mobile River in Alabama, badly injuring three people. After burning for hours, the flames are now out.

Firefighters and Coast Guard officials responded to the initial blasts at around 8:30 p.m. local time on Wednesday. The cause of the explosions is still unknown, but several further blasts erupted throughout the night. It wasn’t until Thursday morning that the fires were finally put out, according to U.S. Coast Guard spokesman Carlos Vega.

The three people who were injured in the blasts were taken to University of South Alabama Medical Center. All three are now in critical condition.

One man who witnessed the explosions, Alan Waugh, described them as sounding “ like bombs going off around. The sky just lit up in orange and red.”

The explosions occurred near the Carnival cruise ship Triumph, which has been in Mobile for repairs since February. The Triumph sustained an engine fire that disabled the ship, requiring tugboats to pull it in to shore—an effort that took days and left passengers onboard living in disgusting, zoo-like conditions. There was no power or functional plumbing, which passengers said made things rather smelly.

[USA Today, NBC]

Love is definitely in the air.

Virgin America has unveiled a new gimmick called Get Lucky in which passengers can flirt with other people onboard.

If you see someone who catches your eye, you can order them a drink or some food and have it sent to their seat. It’s kind of like sending a drink over to someone at a bar, except on a plane there’s nowhere for the object of your affection to hide if he or she is creeped out by your attempts to hit on them.

Once you spot a passenger who gets your heart racing like the engine of a 747, you can scroll through the plane’s digital seat map on the back of the seat in front of you. Then, you just decide what you’d like to order and pay with a credit card, turning the poor, unsuspecting flight attendant into your wingwoman/matchmaker.

Of course, we can’t help but remind you the importance of making sure you send the drink to the right seat. You do not want to flirt with the guy who looks like he hasn’t showered in a week and is snoring so loudly that the control tower demands he wake up.

After the order has been sent, you can start a text conversation with a new program Virgin developed which allows passengers to communicate. If things go really well, you could soon be arranging a time to join the Mile High Club; or you could end up trying to figure out why you’ve been served with a mile-high restraining order.

Virgin founder Richard Branson is optimistic that this novel approach to finding love will work, claiming, “I’m not a betting man, but I say your chance of deplaning with a plus-one are at least 50 percent.” Worst case scenario, you’ve got someone to pass the time with while you wait for your luggage at the baggage carousel.

Our take: don’t get your hopes up too high. It is Virgin after all. The odds of picking up someone would probably be much better if you booked a flight on Hugh Hefner Airlines. Worth a shot, though.

Dogs, as the saying goes, are man’s best friend, so it’s only right and logical that we might want to spend some quality time with our buds. Walks in the park and tossing the Frisbee on the beach are great, but if you really want to engage the human-canine relationship—and have a really good time while you’re at it—you might want to think about setting up a dog agility course in your backyard or garden.

<figure id="attachment_160771"class="alignnone" >
Bill Greenblatt, Getty Images

As some of you might be wondering right about now, what exactly is a dog agility course? Basically, it’s a doggy obstacle course. Owners of well-trained dogs (or not-so-well-trained) run their pooches through a series of obstacles that test their dogs’, well, agility, and their ability to follow commands. It’s a sort-of sport that’s growing in popularity across the planet. So why not give it a try? Your dog is worth it, right?

There are a few things you’ll either need to build, buy or somehow procure (aka borrow indefinitely) in order to set up your backyard or garden dog agility course. Here’s a list of the most common obstacles—pretty standard across the board, really—that you’d find on a typical course:

standard jumps

teeter board

tire jumps

collapsed tunnel

tunnel

weave poles

pause table

dog walk

If cash flow isn’t a problem, you can simply purchase all of the items you’ll need. If you have time, the skills, and want to save a bit of money, you can also build or improvise (from existing supplies) everything yourself—from the tire jump to the teeter board. After you check out a couple of how-to guides online, visit your local hardware store and pick up some PVC pipes and joints, wooden boards, screws and other various tools and materials. You’ll be on your way to creating an incredible agility course.

Building the actual course should be tons of fun. You and your kids might even want to have a go on it when it’s finished. You’ll also enjoy helping your dog move over, through, around, between and under the many obstacles.

Of course, your dog should already be able to respond to at least a few basic commands, like sit, stay and come, before you begin training, since Fido will be off the leash most of the time. If you have an unruly dog, you might want to invest in a few elementary dog-training classes. You’ll be happy that you did, and so will your dog.

<figure id="attachment_160774"class="alignnone" >
Scott Halleran, Getty Images

Things may or may not go smoothly at first, depending on the dog in question, but improving as you go is part of the fun. A dog agility course is a great way to make use of your garden and backyard, and spend quality afternoons with your pooch and family at the same time.

A massive manhunt that spanned several Boston communities has come to an end with Boston police announcing that 19-year-old Dzokhar Tsarnaev, the second suspect in the Boston Marathon bombing, has been captured.

“Tonight our nation is in debt to the people of Boston and of Massachusetts,” President Barack Obama said following Tsarnaev’s arrest.

The manhunt began with the fatal shooting of an MIT officer on Thursday night and prompted widespread lockdowns in Boston, Cambridge and Watertown through Friday evening.

Police searched throughout the night for Dzokhar Tsarnaev, who they said was discovered bloodied and hiding in a boat outside a Watertown home by a neighbor. Tsarnaev was taken into police custody Friday night amid applause and cheering by law enforcement officials and Watertown residents.

The Boston Police Department tweeted at 7:45 p.m.: “Suspect in custody. Officers sweeping the area. Stand by for further info.” The department then tweeted again, at 7:58, “CAPTURED!!! The hunt is over. The search is done. The terror is over. And justice has won. Suspect in custody.”

<figure id="attachment_160556"class="aligncenter" >
Twitter

At a press conference held in Watertown following Dzokhar Tsarnaev’s arrest, Massachusetts State Police spokesperson Col. Timothy Alben said “We’re so grateful to bring justice and closure to this case. We’re exhausted, folks, but we have a victory here tonight.”

In the same news conference, Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick said, “It’s a night where I think we’re all going to rest easy.”

Police surrounded the Boston suburb of Watertown Thursday night after the two alleged suspects in the bombing engaged officers with gunfire and explosives in a residential neighborhood. Police said Tamerlan Tsarnaev, who they believe was the man wearing a black hat in marathon surveillance photos released by the FBI, was killed in the exchange. His brother went on to elude police until Friday until his capture.

“We will determine how this happened,” Obama said. “We will investigate any associations that these terrorists may have had. One thing we do know is that whatever hateful agenda drove these men to such heinous acts will not – cannot – prevail.”

“This has been a tough week. But we have seen the character of our country once more.”

Special Agent Rick DesLauriers of the FBI, who is leading the investigation of the Boston Marathon bombings, just held a press conference in which he revealed that there are two suspects. The FBI released photographs and video of two men believed to be responsible for the attacks.

The FBI showed video of the two men walking through the crowd, each wearing a backpack, presumably with a bomb inside. They appear calm, and don’t attract any attention from anyone they pass by about 12 minutes before the first bomb blast:

Apparently there is also video of the man in the white cap, called “Suspect No. 2,” actually planting one of the bags that later exploded, but the FBI did not release that footage. The two suspects are said to have placed the bombs in their locations mere minutes before the explosions.

DesLauriers says he considers both men “armed and extremely dangerous,” but when asked if there was any further threat to the public, he said, “There is no additional, imminent danger that we are aware of right now.”

The FBI’s website crashed almost immediately after the press conference began, with so many people trying to get a look at the images. It is now up and running again, though a bit slowly. Below you can see all the images released today.

If you recognize either man or have any other information you feel might be helpful, the FBI has set up a website for you to share what you know: bostonmarathontips.fbi.gov. You can also call 1-800-CALL-FBI.

In addition, one lady also bought a ferret, believing it to be a chihuahua. People in Argentina call the “enhanced” ferrets Brazilian rats despite the fact that they’re not rats at all. Turns out, when ferrets get excited, they do a “weasel war dance,” and when they get upset, they hiss. Maybe one of these two terrifying traits are what clued their owners in, since apparently having creepy ferret faces didn’t quite do the trick.

It is with a heavy heart and our thumbs way, way down that we report that film critic Roger Ebert has passed away at the age of 70 after a long public battle with cancer.

To say Ebert was the world’s most influential film critic is an understatement. As a longtime writer for the Chicago Sun Times and the host of multiple incarnations of the syndicated movie review show ‘At the Movies,’ Ebert brought film criticism to the mainstream all the while championing independent and foreign filmmaking. As an author, he published multiple bestselling books, including the classic ‘I Hated, Hated, Hated This Movie’ and his recent autobiography ‘Life Itself.’ As a screenwriter, he was responsible for penning the screenplay for the notorious Russ Meyer flick ‘Beyond the Valley of the Dolls.’ Tech-savvy even in his later years, Ebert was an early proponent of blogging at his popular website and one of the most popular Twitter users on the Web. (You can read his final blog post here.)

But what we’ll remember most about Ebert is the passion he brought to his movie reviews on the show he shared with Gene Siskel, Richard Roeper and many others. Take a look at a few classic Roger Ebert clips below. RIP, Roger. Movie theaters just got a lot darker.

Iram Leon isn’t going to let a little thing like cancer slow him down.

In the latest story about the power of the human spirit on display at a marathon, the 32-year-old man battling terminal brain cancer finished first in the Gusher Marathon in Beaumont, Texas earlier this month, while pushing his six-year-old daughter the entire way.

Leon overcame many obstacles during the race, including a flat tire on the stroller, heavy wind and untied shoelace. That doesn’t even include the fact they had to get permission to compete with a stroller. Running the course with a stroller wasn’t an impediment whatsoever, says Leon. “It can’t be a disadvantage when it’s what gets you going.”

Since the diagnosis, Leon’s perspective on parenting has changed tremendously. “The one thing I’m not going to say on my death bed is, ‘I wish I spent more time with my kid.’”

Leon said his condition has helped him put life in perspective:

People shouldn’t wait to live until they’re told they’re dying. Go home and hug somebody and don’t wait to be told you have a disease that’s going to kill you. I ran my entire life and I was dumb enough to wait until I was told I was dying before I ran with my daughter.”

Leon has always enjoyed running, though, and made a vow to continue – as long as his daughter, Kiana, accompanied him. They finished their first half-marathon last October and have gone on to run in about six more. She has certainly been an inspiration and he must be thrilled to know that the organization that puts on the Gusher Marathon has created a college fund for Kiana.

Doctors have told Leon he will not overcome the cancer and that they hope he will make it to the age of 40. He was diagnosed with cancer shortly after he turned 30 and can no longer drive, work or compete in any contact sports. He also has seizures and frequently vomits after races.

Adidas and Google revealed a new talking sneaker prototype at the South by Southwest conference in Austin, Texas last weekend. The motion-sensing kicks feature a speaker on the tongue that can make commands, give encouragement and post online status updates based on what the wearer is — or isn’t — doing while wearing the shoes.

Unfortunately, Google and Adidas don’t plan to actually release these sneakers. The brainy people at both companies just thought it was a cool way to show how technology can connect the human body with the online world.

The shoes also include an accelerometer, gyroscope and Bluetooth connectivity to your Smartphone and whichever health-related apps you might want. The sneakers store up to 250 pre-recorded motivational phrases or criticisms. As you can hear in the video above, it can also talk smack while you are playing basketball, which will most certainly get you beaten up at some point.

You need these sneakers because your life wouldn’t be complete without a stilted, snide voice telling you — and everyone else — all about what you’re doing. Why not just find some snarky blogger and tie them to your feet? Or is that still considered illegal?

Maybe let us decide when we’re ready to become cyborgs.

Martin Tremblay is going to spend some time in the legal system’s version of the penalty box.

The youth hockey coach from Vancouver, Canada has been sentenced to 15 days in jail for tripping opposing players during a postgame handshake last summer. Pretty mean-spirited, eh?

Tremblay, 48, went from coaching his son’s team to outright goon after the game when he stuck his foot out, causing two players, aged 10 and 13, to fall, in a move so outrageous the guys from ‘Slap Shot’ probably wouldn’t have done it. The older boy hurt his wrist when he tumbled to the ice. Prosecutors had initially asked Tremblay to serve 30 days of house arrest, but the judge in the case took it a step further, handing down the 15-day sentence in an attempt to extol the importance of teaching character.

Judge Patrick Chen explained the punishment:

“Society will not tolerate the assault of children by adults. [The sentence is] a signal to other parents heavily involved in the sporting activities of their children that they must be seen as models of good and acceptable behavior and not as instigators of violence and of riotous behavior.”

In addition to the trip, Tremblay called one of the victims in the matter “twinkle toes” and mocked the way he skated, causing the boy to start bawling.

Incidentally, Tremblay’s team won the game, 5-4, which makes him the ultimate sore winner.

Wow, youth hockey sure has changed since ‘The Mighty Ducks.’

Clearly what you should be doing in your spare time is inventing complicated machinery to deal with your snack food problems. This physicist invented a machine that uses a hatchet to separate Oreos and a router to remove the cream filling. He really hates cream filling. Like, a lot.

You’ve seen it a hundred times in countless sci-fi movies: an object from space comes hurtling towards Earth leaving a trail of thick smoke behind it as curious onlookers turn their heads to the sky, mouths agape. Only this time, it’s real.

Over 500 people were injured in Chelyabinsk, Russia last night when a meteor came blazing into the atmosphere, exploded and sent fireballs raining down as citizens caught all the action on camera.

At 9:20am local time, a large explosion rocked the Central Russia town with the shockwave setting off car alarms and shattering glass. Russia’s space agency Roscosmos confirmed it was a meteorite traveling at approximately 19 miles per second. Some officials there were speculating that this meteorite broke off an asteroid the size of an Olympic swimming pool passing by Earth.

The resulting meteorites (after the explosion in Russia’s skies) scattered across the local region, perhaps even as far as Kazakhstan. It’s too early to know if the meteor brought with it aliens, critters, triffids or blobs.

NASA spokesman Steve Cole told CNN:

This kind of object does fall fairly frequently, but when they fall into the ocean or desert, there is no impact on people — so this one is unusual in the sense that it’s come over a populated area.

Luckily most of the injuries reported were not serious and there are no reported fatalities yet. And perhaps even luckier that it didn’t fall in a more populated area like Moscow, New York City or Los Angeles.

You can watch some of the amateur video of the meteor falling from the sky below, each providing a different glimpse of the arrival and the deafening explosion.

Olympic star Oscar Pistorius broke down in tears as he stood before magistrate Desmond Nair. Pistorius is being charged with murder in the shooting death of his girlfriend, model Reeva Steenkamp.

A news reporter in the court said that Pistorius “sobbed uncontrollably” with his head bowed when the charges were read aloud. The case was postponed until Tuesday and Pistorius will remain in police custody until next week.

Police were called to Pistorius’s home in a gated community in eastern Pretoria around 4am on Thursday morning by neighbors who heard gunshots. Upon arrival, police found the body of Steenkamp; she had been shot four times and a 9mm pistol was found at the scene. Investigators speculate she was shot through a bathroom door. It wasn’t the first time police responded to a call at the residence for a domestic dispute.

A statement on behalf of Pistorius’s family and management said “he denies the charge in the strongest terms.”
