Tornadoes Rip Through Texas, Leave Several Dead

weather channel via KXAS TV

Today in Lufkin and Nacogdoches we have the chance of heavy rain with embedded thunderstorms, but the situation doesn’t appear to be anything like what North Texas saw last night.

As many as ten possible tornadoes ripped through areas west of Dallas-Fort Worth Wednesday night, and left 250 people homeless, 100 injured, and 6 dead.  Changes to those numbers could come today as emergency responders fully assess the damage.

Hood, Ellis, and Johnson counties suffered the most damage.  A twister destroyed most of a Habitat for Humanity subdivision in Granbury.  The NBC affiliate in Dallas says “about 50 people gathered in the Oak Wood Elementary School after nightfall Wednesday to have their injured children examined by paramedics. Five were taken away by ambulance.”

The number of damaged homes is expected to increase quickly today with the daylight, covering homes that have been totally destroyed, and those that only suffered roof damage.

As our chance of thunderstorms continues today in East Texas, if you want to help those in North Texas affected by last night’s storms, you can donate to the American Red Cross.  They’ve set up shelters to help those who have been displaced.  It’s also a great time to donate blood.
