April 15 - today -is normally the day for the midnight tax dash. But because of the observance of Emancipation Day in the District of Columbia, the dreaded deadline to file federal income taxes this year is Monday.

That gives you another weekend to finish your return, and to look for some tax deductions you may have missed and other ways to save a few bucks. Here are some tips from experts.

Don't do your taxes in a hurry.  Give yourself plenty of time and take your time. Pull out last year's tax return and use it as a guide. It can remind you of deductions, credits and income that might help with this year's return.

Use a calculator, and go back and check your math the next day, unless that's after the filing deadline.

If you use tax software, make sure it's updated to reflect all the major tax changes that were made in December. That software you bought at an after-Thanksgiving sale may not include last-minute changes to the tax code.

If you can't finish your return even with this year's three extra days, you can fill out IRS Form 4868 and get an extension until October 17th to find all those papers, receipts and statements you should have been keeping in one place.

It's important to remember that an extension just gives you more time to file your return.  Not more time to pay your taxes.
