A woman was rushed to the hospital after being shot in the back of the head while driving on the North Freeway in Houston, Texas Friday morning (Mar 20) shortly after 7:00 AM.

Police say the shooting is believed to be the result of an alleged road rage incident that turned violent. The female driver was getting on Interstate 45 and honked at a white SUV, which led to an altercation with the individual in the SUV.

"At that point the guy that was driving the vehicle (SUV) started taunting her, basically developing into a road rage situation," Harris County Assistant Chief Deputy Mark Herman said at a news conference this morning.  "At some point the individual in the white SUV drove up to the right side of her vehicle at which time one gunshot was fired striking the victim in the back of the head," Herman continues.

The 28-year-old victim, identified as Kay Hafford, managed to pull over and call 911 for help. Herman said the woman was critically injured and in and out of consciousness when first responders arrived. Herman also said that she may still have bullet fragments in her brain.

Herman also mentioned that the victim's husband was able to make it to the scene and was with her when she was transported to the hospital.

Police are now searching for a man wearing a blue baseball cap driving a white SUV. He was last seen going southbound on I-45 in Houston.
