Texas Officials Balk at Cost of National Sex Offender Registry
Texas Governor Rick Perry and legislative leaders appear ready to "go to the mat" with the federal government over the projected costs of being part of the national sex offender registry.
It's the Adam Walsh Act, which created a national registry local law enforcement agencies could tap to keep track of sex offenders in their areas.
Texas has the second-largest sex offender database in the nation, with 63,000 men and women registered - but Governor Rick Perry is balking at the federal law's requirements and costs.
Perry says it's estimated it would cost the state nearly 40 million dollars to implement the federal law's requirements, coming at a time when the state is facing a budget crisis.
This is seen as the latest round in Governor Rick Perry's ongoing war with Washington over unfunded mandates, federal laws that require programs at the state and local level, but don't provide the money to pay for them.
