The Texas Conservation Alliance has earned the highly prestigious "Affiliate of the Year" award from the National Wildlife Federation for its work in protecting and preserving the Neches River.

Texas Conservation Alliance executive director Janice Bezanson of Lufkin says this is a great honor, and is even more special because it's coming on the National Wildlife Federation's  75th anniversary.

The Alliance’s next goal is to get Congress to declare the Neches River as Wild and Scenic, which would protect it from commercial development.

The Texas Conservation Alliance will accept its award at the National Wildlife Federation’s annual meeting and awards dinner April 14-16 in Washington, D.C.

The Conservation Alliance is pursuing the Wild and Scenic Area designation, despite an apparent lack of interest in the Texas Congressional Delegation. One observer says that's probably because it could open the door for more federal control over the Neches River watershed.
