Portions of Highway 59 and Highway 7 Closed Due to Flood Issues

Southbound lanes of US 59 near Shepherd in San Jacinto County will be closed later this evening due to flooding.  Additionally, portions of Highway 7 near Center in Shelby County will be narrowed to one lane. 

The outside east and westbound lanes of SH 7, about 5 miles west of Center will be narrowed to one lane after flooding caused the roadway to separate. Utility workers are in the area after a gas line ruptured when the pavement separated. Motorists should use caution, prepare for delays and reduce speed through the area.

On Highway 59, Texas Department of Transportation officials opted to close the southbound lanes as water has continued to rise throughout the day. Detours for the closure will take southbound traffic to SH 150, then to FM 2666 and on to FM 2025 before returning to US 59 South near Cleveland. The detour will be in place until the water recedes.

There will be detour signs and lighted message boards set throughout the detour to guide motorists back to US 59 South. Motorists are urged to remain alert through the detour and prepare for delays.

“The decision to close the southbound lanes was made with the safety of all motorists being the first consideration,” said Rhonda Oaks, public information officer for the Lufkin District.  “With the forecast for additional rain in the forecast tonight and Friday, motorists should be cautious as they approach low areas or water across roadways. Never drive through rising water.”
