On Monday, thousands of people marched through the streets of North Korea’s capital and wept openly at the death of leader Kim Jong-il, who died on Saturday at 69 from a heart attack.

Mourners stood at attention in neat rows and sang, while others cried hysterically. Some even bowed before a giant statue of Jong-il in Pyongyang.

According to the Korean Central News Agency, a 10-day period of mourning is now in effect and a state funeral will be held on Dec. 28. Watch the mass weeping below.
