There were some anxious moments Thursday morning when a small fire broke out in the engine compartment of an NISD school bus.  The bus was in line at Fredonia Elementary School.

According to a release from NISD, bus 84 had an electrical fire this morning around 7:10. The fire department was called, and thanks to the great work of the driver and bus aide,  all students got off the bus safely.  There were a total of 5 students on the bus at the time of the fire.

The fire was the result of a transmission line that had rubbed against a battery cable.

"Our top priority is the safety of our students. I am glad to say our bus driver
and staff at Fredonia Elementary handled the situation correctly and all the students were safely removed from the bus in a timely manner,” said NISD Associate Superintendent for Administrative Services Grey Burton.

“I am very proud of the bus driver Loyce Baxter and bus aide Ms. Hicks for how they handled the situation. They are trained on what to do when such an incident occurs. They stayed focused and calm. They followed procedures to ensure the safety of all our students,” said NISD Transportation Director Stacy Lampkin.
