It's one thing to make knives.

That's a skill most people just don't have, and something that takes a lot of time, attention, and craftsmanship.  And how about knives made with the steel from American battleships?  Those are truly unique.

Richardson Knives in Lufkin is selling the one-of-a-kind knives, crafted by Perry Richardson, who says on his website he's been making knives since 1989.

Richardson says he makes lock back folders, Slipjoints, Hunters, Skinners, Bowie's and Fighting Knives, or in other words, "knives that he likes."

KTRE ran a story this week on what the knife-making process involves, from acquiring the metal from the battleship, to turning that into a unique knife and putting it up for sale. Richardson told KTRE that he's making a knife for President Bush 41 right now.

Part of the money from the knife sales goes to the Battleship Texas Foundation to help with maintenance costs of the historic ships, and to help with educational programs so kids know the stories and the importance of the battleships.  Some of the proceeds are also directed toward the Wounded Warrior Project.

The holiday season is coming up, and that might make a pretty cool gift for someone on your list.  And it's made right here in Lufkin.
