The Early Head Start program uses federal funding to serve low income children from birth to 36 months in addition to its established Head Start program, which serves children ages 3 to 5.

It's located in north Lufkin at Kurth Drive and Martin Luther King Drive, and it's equipped with a computer lab, full kitchen, conference room and rooms for each age group, and two playgrounds.

Teachers and aides focus on preparing the children for kindergarten, and the center provides medical, dental, vision and hearing screenings.

The center now has 34 children ages 3 through 5 and 12 children from 6 months through 36 months. It's for low income families only, and there's room for more children.

For more information, the center's phone number is 936-225-3283.
