Lufkin and Nacogdoches chapters of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas are holding several events to observe Texas Independence Day, and honor the memories of the people who established Texas in March and April of 1836.

Both chapters honored the 175th anniversary of Texas independence by ceremonially ringing the bell at the Old University Center on Mound Street in Nacogdoches.

Friday, the Lufkin group will honor their chapter’s namesake, Mary Hall Mantooth, by placing a medallion on her headstone, in the Walker Cemetery on U.S. Highway 59 north.  Saturday, the groups will gather to commemorate the fall of the Alamo.

A spokeswoman for the DRT says keeping Texas history alive is one way to honor the brave men and women who created and defended the nation and state of Texas.
