Lady Aggies Win NCAA Basketball Championship

The Aggies of Texas A&M are the national champions of women's basketball, after beating a tough team from Notre Dame in the title game of the NCAA Women's Tournament.

All-America forward Danielle Adams led A&M with a dominating performance. She scored 30 points, the second-highest total in championship history, and pulled down nine rebounds to earn the Final Four’s Most Outstanding Player award.

The Aggies were in control for the first 12 minutes but lost their momentum when point guard Sydney Colson picked up her third foul and went to the bench.  Then the Irish went on a tear, taking a two-point lead into intermission and extending it to seven early in the second half.

With Colson back on the floor, and with Adams leading the way, the Aggies went on a run and were up by seven points with seven minutes left.  The Irish fought back and managed to cut A&M’s lead to two with 1:38 remaining.

That's when the Aggies took control and closed out the game on top 76-70.

The victory capped the greatest season in A&M’s 37-year women’s basketball history.

Texans everywhere are proud of these lady Aggies, especially in Nacogdoches, where Aggies Coach Gary Blair coached the SFA Ladyjacks from 1985 to 1993.

He compiled a 210-43 record.  His Ladyjack teams won seven straight conference championships, and appeared in the NCAA Tournament six times.  Blair was inducted into the Ladyjack Hall of Fame during halftime of the Ladyjacks game against the Aggies on December 2, 2008.
