Jim Lehrer Stepping Down From ‘NewsHour’ After 36 Years [VIDEO]

Legendary news anchor Jim Lehrer announced Thursday that he is stepping down from his post as anchor of PBS' 'NewsHour' after an incredible 36-year run, the longest in network TV history.

The 76-year-old anchor, whose last day will be June 6, will continue to moderate the show's weekly news panel on Fridays, according to the Washington Post.

"I have been laboring in the glories of daily journalism for 52 years ... 36 of them here at the 'NewsHour' and its earlier incarnations," he told his staff. "There comes a time to step aside from the daily process, and that time has arrived."

'NewsHour' dates back to 1975, when it was 'The Robert MacNeil Report.' At the time, Lehrer served as a Washington correspondent and one of the show's developers. A year later, it became 'The MacNeil/Lehrer Report,' then 'The NewsHour With Jim Lehrer' when MacNeil left in 1995.

In addition to 'NewsHour,' TV fans may remember Lehrer for his work as a moderator of the Presidential debates.
