Get Your Sugar Fix While You Can — The New York City Soda Ban Has Passed
This morning in New York City, Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s ban on large sugar-laden drinks was approved by the Department of Health in a 9-1 vote.
How long do the Big Apple’s Big Gulp enthusiasts have until they can’t buy a soda bigger than 16 ounces?
The ban is set to take effect on March 12, 2013, 180 days after today’s vote, and it will make sure that restaurants, fast-food chains and movie theaters sell their customers sugar-sweetened drinks in cups that are 16 ounces or smaller.
As it turns out, Big Gulp enthusiasts will still be able to get their jumbo-size drinks, as convenience stores and grocery stores are expected to be exempt from the ban.
Despite the mayor’s resolve, recent studies and polls have shown that a majority of New Yorkers are against Bloomberg’s idea, suggesting that he’s furthering his “nanny state” agenda. These protests have even included some notable celebrities.
