Dr. Michael Ciampi may very well be a hero for our times.

The family practitioner from South Portland, Maine has launched a revolutionary way to treat patients: he no longer accepts health insurance.

Given the constant debate and chirping about the issue, it's easy to understand why Ciampi's new policy has raised eyebrows.

Ciampi says, “Instead of working for the government or working for insurance companies, we’re gonna work for the patient." He adds that eliminating insurance removes the need to adhere to the mountain of regulations he must follow and allows patients to simply pay out of pocket, kind of like they would for a service or product at a store.

Because insurance is no longer part of the equation, people save as much as 50 percent off what they may have had to pay in the past.

We say if this doc has come up with a way to make it easier to get medical treatment, then let's go with it. What do you think?
