Friday morning, you will have the opportunity to show your support for our men and women who sacrifice so much so that we may be protected.

Governor Gregg Abbott has requested law enforcement across our state to turn on their red and blue lights for one minute at 11 am to honor Harris County Deputy Darren Goforth who was shot and killed while putting gas in his patrol car last week.

Last week's tragic occurrence has angered and saddened many Texans, but it has prompted action---action in the form of a massive wave of support for those that wear the uniforms of law enforcement.

Police and sheriff agencies in Lufkin, Nacogdoches, and cities and towns across the Lone Star State will be observing Governor Abbott's request.

In Lufkin, the community is invited to attend the “Stand with Law Enforcement” event to be held at 10:55 a.m. Friday at Louis Bronaugh Park in conjunction with the funeral of Harris County Deputy Darren Goforth.

City Manager Keith Wright wishes to bring the community together in light of Gov. Greg Abbott’s statewide call for all Texas law enforcement officers to turn on their red and blue flashing lights for one minute at 11 a.m. Friday – the time Deputy Goforth’s funeral is set to begin.

“Respect and pride in our law enforcement must be restored in this state and nation,” Abbott said in the statewide call. “It is time to unite in solidarity to support the men and women who serve and protect our communities. “I ask that communities across Texas support this cause for unity and remember the essential role that law enforcement plays in keeping Texas safe and strong.”

All local agencies have been invited to attend. During the event, attendees will hear Lufkin Mayor Bob Brown read a proclamation in honor of local law enforcement, while members of Lufkin Police Department’s Clergy and Police Alliance will lead the event in prayer. Other speakers are also expected. Support ribbons made by the Lufkin Police Wives group will also be available while they last.

Several members of Lufkin Police Department’s Honor Guard will be attending Deputy Goforth’s funeral in Houston tomorrow, along with members of other Angelina County law enforcement agencies.

Louis Bronaugh Park is behind Lufkin City Hall at the intersection of Third Street and Burke Avenue.

In Nacogdoches, representatives from the sheriff's department will be setting up at the expo/civic center parking lot at 10:40 A.M. Sharply at 11 am all patrol units emergency lights will be turned on, plus the playing of Taps will be observed as well as lowering of our flag.  The public is invited to attend.
