Closure of Tyler Mail Processing Center Could Delay Your Mail

More is known now about the timeline for the closure of an East Texas mail processing center.

Last May we brought you the news here on this blog, that the mail processing facility in Tyler was on the list of announced closures as the postal service looks to tighten up its budget, and now it looks like that will happen in June of this year.  What does it mean exactly for our mail in Lufkin?

Well, delays are possible.  There were previous reports that this mail processing center in Smith County handled about 100-thousand pieces of mail each day, both incoming and outgoing.  Letters mailed in Lufkin and Nacogdoches go there for processing.

KTRE reports beginning June 1st, mail from zip codes starting with ’756′ will be sent to the USPS Shreveport facility, zip codes starting with ’757′ will go to the USPS North Texas facility in Coppell and zip codes starting with ’758′ will be sent to the USPS Austin facility.

It’s possible that an extra day could be added to the time it takes to receive a letter, and for that matter, you’ll have to drop a bill in the mail extra early to allow your money time to reach its destination and then be credited to your account.

This is all part of a plan by the Postal Service to save money, and this could possibly save $14 million per year.

And don’t forget it looks like we’ll lose Saturday mail delivery too.  That’s planned for this August.
