’42′ Review

My grandmother, Rhoda Singer, died earlier this year. She lived much of her life in Brooklyn and was a Brooklyn Dodgers fan. Her favorite player was Pee Wee Reese, the Dodgers' scrappy white shortstop who famously silenced a racist Cincinnati crowd by putting his arm around his black teammate Jackie Robinson during pre-game warmups.

I thought about my grandmother a lot while watching '42,' the new biopic of Jackie Robinson and his quest to break the color barrier in baseball. On an intellectual level, I can tell you a dozen things wrong with the movie, from its excessively preachy dialogue to its bloated length. But on an emotional level, I have to admit that this movie bypassed my brain and grabbed my heart, pulling each and every string contained therein firmly and repeatedly. It's a pretty good tribute to a great man. And when Pee-Wee and Jackie embraced on that field in Cincinnati I cried.

Man Buys Poodles, Discovers They’re Actually Ferrets on Steroids

This is not a joke. A man at the largest outdoor bazaar in Buenos Aires bought two toy poodles from a vendor for $150 each. Only he didn't actually buy two poodles. He actually bought two ferrets that were hopped up on steroids and given fancy hairdos so they would look like poodles.

East Texas Reacts to Kaufman County Killings

The news of the killings in Kaufman is making national headlines, and causing courthouses across the country to question security, and in some cases provide extra security for public officials.

Kaufman is about 135 miles away from Nacogdoches.  Two months ago, Kaufman County Assistant District Attorney Mark Hasse was shot and killed on his way from the parking lot to his office.  The investigation is ongoing.  This past Saturday, Hasse's boss, Kaufman County DA, Mike McLelland and his wife, were shot and killed inside their home.

Nacogdoches County is reacting, and ordering some security assessments as we speak.
