Good News; Maybe the South Isn’t the Fattest After All

If a survey-taker called and said she was doing research on obesity in the US and asked how much you weigh, would you tell the truth?

The South always gets a bad rap for having the biggest obesity problems, but now there's new evidence that shows perhaps we're just more honest!  Some of the worst obesity problems in the US are said to be in southern states like Mississippi and Alabama, and Texas doesn't fare a whole lot better.  But maybe that's just because those in northern states aren't quite as forthcoming with the details about their body weight.

Lufkin Industries to be Purchased by GE

General Electric wants to get more involved in the energy industry, and that means big bucks for one Lufkin Company.

It's been announced the GE is buying Lufkin Industries for 38 percent above the closing price of its shares on Friday.  GE values the deal at around $3.3 billion dollars.

Lufkin Police Want Help Finding a Kidnapper

A 6-year old girl was kidnapped on Tuesday, and eventually released near Hudson, and Lufkin police are still looking for the kidnapper.  The girl was put through quite an ordeal but was unhurt, and now police concentrate on the search for the suspect.

The College Application Process is Turning Into a Fierce Competition

If you're applying to go to a particular college in the fall, the first week of April is usually the time to find out whether or not you've been accepted, and then you have to notify the school by the first part of May if you accept the invitation.  Every school works differently, but that seems to be the general trend.

SFA is taking applications for the fall, and they've posted info on how to apply on their website.

There is one school in the US that gets more than 38,000 applications every year, and accepts only 2200 new students.  Any guess?  It's an Ivy League school.

East Texas Reacts to Kaufman County Killings

The news of the killings in Kaufman is making national headlines, and causing courthouses across the country to question security, and in some cases provide extra security for public officials.

Kaufman is about 135 miles away from Nacogdoches.  Two months ago, Kaufman County Assistant District Attorney Mark Hasse was shot and killed on his way from the parking lot to his office.  The investigation is ongoing.  This past Saturday, Hasse's boss, Kaufman County DA, Mike McLelland and his wife, were shot and killed inside their home.

Nacogdoches County is reacting, and ordering some security assessments as we speak.
