Busy Travel Weekend Ahead in Texas

By Monday and Tuesday we’ll be sitting comfortably around the Christmas tree, sipping egg nog with family and trying to figure out how in the world a Furby really works.

In the meantime, it’s a big ole traffic jam! Today and tomorrow are two of the busiest travel days of the year.

Triple A estimates 7.7 million Texans will be traveling more than 50 miles from home between Saturday and January 1. Millions of packages are on their way too, but they may not get here by Christmas.

The snow storm in the upper Midwest has cancelled hundreds of flights and in some cases, has stranded travelers along the side of the road. And if the snow isn’t letting mini vans and SUVs through, it ain’t lettin’ FedEx and UPS trucks through either. Cargo planes scheduled to take off Thursday from Chicago O’Hare Airport were grounded, meaning that package you ordered online and expect to arrive Monday, might still be sitting on the tarmac.

Texas has much better weather than states to the north. Our forecast in Lufkin calls for sunshine all the way through Christmas Eve with highs peaking at about 71 on Sunday. Beautiful! Christmas Day will be cooler – in the 50′s with a few clouds. I have family driving to Texas today from Nebraska, and they can’t wait to see trees and houses that aren’t under a mountain of snow.

AAA says the number of holiday travelers will be up 2.4 percent this year, thanks to an improved economy. Gas prices are averaging $3.03 right now in Texas. Driving is cheaper than flying.

You may be stuck in traffic this weekend, someone may cut you off and not use a blinker, or you may encounter a crabby traveler that makes your yuletide a little less gay. But despite the headaches there is still much to be thankful for this Christmas. At least the Mayans were wrong and we’re all still here!
