Are You Near Sighted? Far Sighted? Screen Sighted?

It’s a brand new problem thanks to smart phones.

Since we spend so much time looking at small screens on smart phones and tablets, one researcher says it’s ruining our eyesight!  Sort of.  At the very least, more people are having problems seeing things off in the distance.

You can see your apps on your smart phone, but can you still read road signs ahead? Is our screen-centric world ruining our eyesight?

The issue of blurry objects in the distance used to be known as “near sightedness.”  If you can see things up close and things in the distance are blurry, you’re near sighted. Or is it screen sightedness?

Some facts according to one researcher:

There has been a 35% increase in the number of people with advancing myopia (near sightedness) since the launch of smartphones in 1997

The problem could increase by 50% in the next ten years

50% of 30-year-olds could have the problem by 2033 due to smartphones

Will this make us stop using smart phones or cut back?  Nope!  I just thought I’d pass this news along.  So what do we do?  I suppose we just need to look up more often and read signs in the distance to balance it all out.
